CONGRATULATIONS to Award Winners

The Oklahoma Press Association presented its Better Newspaper Contest Awards during the OPA Annual Convention, June 6-7, at the Grand Casino Hotel & Resort in Shawnee.

Also announced during the two-day convention were the recipients of the OPA H. Milt Phillips Award and the Oklahoma Newspaper Foundation's Beachy Musselman Award. Russell M. Perry, publisher at The Black Chronicle, received the prestigious Milt Phillips Award from the OPA Board of Directors. Corey Jones, public service reporter for the Tulsa World, was awarded the Beachy Musselman Award by the ONF Board of Trustees.

Winners of this year's Sequoyah Awards in the OPA Better Newspaper Contest were the Enid News & Eagle, McAlester News-Capital, Choctaw Times, Midwest City Beacon, The Purcell Register, McIntosh County Democrat, Minco-Union City Times and The Cameron University Collegian.

Other awards presented:

  • A-Mark Prize for Investigative Reporting: First Place to Garrett Yalch and Clifton Adcock, The Frontier; Second Place to Andy Dossett, Bartlesville Examiner-Enterprise; and Third Place to Ruby Topalian, Oklahoma Watch.
  • Half Century Club inductees: Bruce Campbell from the Enid News & Eagle, C. Ross Coyle at The Blanchard News, Jerry Fink at The Eufaula Indian Journal and John Lewis of The Seminole Producer.
  • Quarter Century Club inductees: Shauna Belyeu at The Eufaula Indian Journal, Denise Frost at the Okmulgee Times, Eric Hunter, Sean Stephens and Calvin Stone at the Clinton Daily News.
  • ONG Editorial Sweepstakes Award to James Beaty, McAlester News-Capital
  • ONG Column Sweepstakes Award to Connie Burcham, Watonga Republican
  • OGE Daily, Semi- or Tri-Weekly Photo of the Year to Andy Dossett, Bartlesville Examiner-Enterprise
  • OGE Weekly Photo of the Year to Sherry Loudermilk, Coalgate Record-Register
  • ONF Joseph H. Edwards Outdoor Writer of the Year Award to Jake Sermersheim, Tahlequah Daily Press
  • ONF Ray Lokey Memorial Award for Excellence in Reporting to Lynn Adams, Sequoyah County Times
