The business community is reeling from economic problems caused by coronavirus. When local businesses falter the local media that depends on advertising from those businesses is harmed as well.
In the next stimulus package coming from Congress, there is already a groundswell of support to help local media with access to Paycheck Protection Programs as well as a national advertising effort to support local media. That advertising program will communicate vital government information about our current health crisis to the general public through news outlets large and small.
Oklahoma's congressional delegation knows and understands the importance of local news media and should be supportive of this issue. Each newspaper should contact Senators Inhofe and Lankford, as well as their own U.S. Representatives (Lucas, Cole, Mullin, Horn and Hern). Ask them to express their support for local media by supporting legislation to help them survive this crisis, just as they have done for other industries and the American people that depend on local news outlets for vital information.
Below is an explanation of the issue to send to your congressional delegation. Local people need local media now more than ever, and congressional support for this type of legislation is vital to our continued success.
